Apply for training: Introducing visual communications in WASH

Deadline: 12 June 2023 17:00

Applications have now closed. We have notified successful applicants.

However, if you are interested in talking to us about running the course for your organisation, we would be delighted to discuss tailoring the course to your needs and funds needed to cover our time. Please contact us on [email protected] if you have any queries.

Building on previous work on visual communications and creative methods, we are pleased to invite applications for a new training module on visual communications in WASH.

When is the training?

The training will be held in July over three sessions of 2 hours each. The course is designed for participants to attend all three sessions, as the content for each session follows on from the previous session.

  • Tuesday 11th July
    9am -11am (UK time)
  • Wednesday 12th July
    9am -11am (UK time)
  • Thursday 13th July
    9am – 11am (UK time)

What will the training cover?

The training will draw on the key principles of visual participatory methods such as Photovoice and Participatory Video.

It will cover visual literacy, ethics, captioning, and the particular challenges of working with images in the WASH sector.

Between session 1 and 2, and between session 2 and 3, participants will be required to complete a short photography task that shouldn’t take longer than 30 minutes.

Who should join the training?

This training is aimed at practitioners working in the areas of sanitation and hygiene who are interested in using photos in their communications, research or advocacy work. We would also like participants to be open to sharing lessons from the training with their colleagues and stakeholders to cascade the learning.

We will review applications from low and lower-middle income countries. To give you an idea, check out the countries included in UNICEF’s Game Plan to End Open Defecation (page 4).

Participants will need to be able to join video calls (with cameras on) using a computer or tablet. Participants will also need to have a device that takes photos, and be able to transfer those photos to the internet.

Due to time restraints and the nature of the course, we are limited to 6 spaces. For this course, participants do not need to pay to attend.

How to apply

Please fill out the application form below by Monday 12th June 5pm (UK time). We will review applications and notify successful applicants by the end of June.
