Global Handwashing Day 2020 Fact Sheet

Developed to explain the research and rationale behind 2020’s Global Handwashing Day theme, “Hand Hygiene for All”, this factsheet provides a concise summary of the case for handwashing programming as well as key approaches. It contains handwashing data from a range of countries, highlights key considerations including inequities, and other information to scale up hand hygiene in response to COVID-19 and in the longer term. It is designed to align with the Hand Hygiene for All Initiative launched in 2020 and led by WHO and UNICEF. Available in English, French and Spanish.

Who is it for? Busy policy makers or practitioners advocating for handwashing, including those in government, civil society, private sector and NGOs.

Why is it valuable? This concise, six-page fact sheet presents key information on the need for and key components of handwashing programming in an easily accessible way. It can be used directly or to inform the development of additional materials. It includes data on handwashing in different settings and contexts which can be used directly to make the case for handwashing, as well as key programming considerations to inform top level design of interventions. Links are provided throughout so readers can easily access more information as required.
