Social norms

Entrenched social norms can also limit or prevent toilet use. Social norms are widely accepted or agreed values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviours – reflecting what a person considers acceptable and expected behaviour.

If people do not expect others to use toilets and adopt improved hygienic behaviour – and believe that others do not expect them to do so either – it can be challenging to instil new habits and behaviours.
