Guidance Note: Foundations of Disability-Inclusive WASH

June 2018

This Guidance Note is designed to support development organisations in planning for disability inclusion within community-based WASH projects. It focuses on the foundations of an inclusive approach to WASH in order to assist organisations to plan and budget for an inclusive approach in the design/inception phases of WASH programs.

The note refers to rights-based approaches to WASH, staff’s commitment to and understanding of disability inclusion, integrating disability inclusion throughout the WASH program cycle, including people with disabilities within community processes, and working across community, service delivery, systems and policy levels.

A number of ways are suggested for deepening disability-inclusive WASH practice including integrated approach to gender equity and disability inclusion, accessibility and use of universal design, working with local people with disabilities and their representative organisations, linking with other disability programs and services and supporting people experiencing more complex barriers to WASH.
